What We Do
The Space Grant Education and Enterprise Institute (SGEEI) is a California Not-For-Profit Corporation and IRS 501c3 Publicly Supported Organization formed to address Science, Engineering technology breakthroughs, workforce development and pre-college education. SGEEI successfully engenders and mangers public-private partnerships at all levels of technology innovations from space based biotechnology research to experiential science teacher education.

OUR PARTNERSHIP AND ENTERPRISE PROGRAMS include the Alliance for Commercial Enterprises and Education in Space (ACES, www.alliancespace.net), the Biotechnology Space Research Alliance (BSRA, www.bsraportal.org) and our NASA Interagency Personnel Act Fellows Program.
- Working closely with the NASA Ames Space Portal and our ACES team we successfully held national workshops and engendered partnerships in commercial space transportation, micro-gravity research and venture capital investment.
- As the managing partner of BSRA, we focus on validating the International Space Station’s and other Space Platform’s capabilities to provide a unique and cost effective research environment for breakthrough biomedical and biotechnology discoveries. BSRA’s founding members include BIOCOM, BIOCOM Institute, Connect, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, San Diego Regional EDC and the UCSD Health Sciences School, Jacobs School and UC Regents.
- BSRA and ACE^2 are working closely with the NASA ISS program office to inform other national agencies and departs about the great potential offers by Micro-Gravity Research.
- We are also able to support NASA Interagency Personnel Act (IPA) assignments. In 2008 Dr. Dan Rasky, a NASA Senior Scientist, joined our Institute team supporting scientific, technical, engineering and mathematics research, workforce development, education and partnership development programs.
OUR UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGE PROGRAMS facilitate student-mentor, hands-on research projects and learning experiences with state and federal government partners. In this way, with public and government support, we enable learners of all ages, backgrounds and environments to enter the high skills workforce.
- For the past six years, together with our partners at the National Space Grant Foundation, we have operated the NASA Ames Education Associates program placing over 1,200 students from over 200 universities and colleges into NASA internships and fellowships.
- Through our Student-Mentor University Research Projects we have helped provide over $4M dollars in university research grants throughout the nation benefiting all NASA mission directorates.
- We are closely partnered with the National Space Grant College and Fellowship program’s 52 state based coalitions (including Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia). We are able to quickly reach out to their 572 institutes of higher education and 162 are Historically Black Colleges/Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), or Tribal colleges.
OUR PRE-COLLEGE STEM EDUCATION PROGRAMS seek to transform students’ Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education experiences by providing student focused resources, programs, funding and mentors. We address the students’ entire education pathway from the time they enter elementary school until they graduate from a technical college or research university. We also seek to inspire, educate, support and nurture their teachers and administrators, helping them to concentrate on their students by providing explicit and effective resources. In doing so we seek to elevate STEM teaching from a much derided vocation to an honored and sought after profession.
- Our Eco-Center for Alternative Energy Education (www.sdecocenter.org), located in central San Diego, has reached over 30,000 students, teachers and parents with hands-on education field trips and activities.
- Our Lompoc and San Diego Science and Technology Teacher Resource Centers (www.treasuresforteachers.org) serve over 4,000 teachers throughout southern California with i) a “distribution center” for free classroom materials recycled from industry, conferences and conventions; ii) a “library/resource center” with over 200 sets of science and technology curriculum materials created government agencies; iii) a “meeting place” for professional gatherings and teacher professional development workshops.
- We are also teamed with the La Jolla based Rendezvous Science Center (www.rendezvouscenter.com), Liberty School at NTC, USFIRST Robotics (www.regional.sandiegorobotics.com) and AIAA education and pre-college programs.
